The National Institute of Oceanography

The National Institute of Oceanography, founded in 1966,is an scientific research organization in India. Leela was commissioned to work and edit parts of a book about the history of the institute.

We wanted to create something that went beyond a hagiography of an institution or just some glossy book filled with dates and accomplishments. The campus at Dona Paula, a charming side of Goa, turned us into oceanographers for our stint there. We discovered that the discipline of oceanography maintains a deep mystique despite its scientific roots. The wonder of the hermit crab, all the wonders yet to be unraveled by marine archeology, the mechanics that goes behind a shipping vessel — all of these things started mattering to us immensely. And that showed in our work.
